Many helmets with fiberglass weave patterns include high-strength materials such as carbon fiber or Kevlar. Helmet costs rise when more of these types of materials are added.

The advantage of fiberglass composite helmets over traditional steel helmets is their greater flexibility under impact. This allows shock waves to spread out more evenly. Because of its brittleness, the helmet shell is more susceptible to cracking from impact. In these cases, the helmet shell will crack and a larger part of the Styrofoam layers can help it collapse. Synthetic Reinforced shell (SRS), helmets consist of a heat-cured thermoplastic rubber resin, and multiple layers of organic fibers and glass fibers. The result is a helmet shell lighter in weight and with better elasticity under impact than a standard-type thermoplastic resin helmet.
